What Does Bespoke Pilates Actually Mean?

‘Bespoke Pilates’ can sound like a marketing phrase, so it is worth being clear about what it actually means. At Pilates with Lou, it means the session is shaped around the individual rather than expecting everybody to perform the same routine in the same way.

That is particularly important because people arrive with different movement experience, confidence, goals and preferences. A personalised approach gives Lou the freedom to respond to what she sees and to how the movement feels for you.

It starts with the person, not the exercise list

A bespoke session is not simply a fixed sequence with a few easier or harder alternatives. Lou can consider where you are starting from, what you want to work towards and how you respond during the session.

That may mean changing the range of a movement, slowing it down, altering the number of repetitions, spending longer on technique or introducing a different exercise altogether. The aim is not to make Pilates easier or harder for the sake of it; it is to make the session appropriate and useful for you.

Your pace matters

One of the advantages of 1:1 and 2:1 Pilates is that there is no pressure to match the pace of a room full of people. If you need more time to understand a movement, you can take it. If you are ready for more challenge, the session can progress.

This is one reason personalised mat Pilates can suit both beginners and people who already have Pilates experience. The same principles can be explored at very different levels.

Adaptation is part of good teaching

Bodies do not all move in exactly the same way. A movement that feels comfortable for one person may need changing for someone else. Lou can observe, ask how something feels and adapt the exercise rather than expecting you to force yourself into a particular position.

Bespoke does not mean complicated

Personalised Pilates can still feel calm and simple. The point is not to fill every session with endless variations. It is to choose movements thoughtfully and teach them with enough attention for you to understand what you are doing.
