Pilates for Tight Hips and Stiff Shoulders in Bournemouth
Many of us recognise the feeling of getting up after sitting for a long time and noticing that the hips or shoulders feel less free than we would like. Desk work, driving, busy routines and simply spending a lot of time in the same positions can all leave us wanting to move.
Pilates is not a medical treatment for pain or injury, but controlled movement may help you explore comfortable movement, develop body awareness and build strength around the areas you use every day.
Why gentle movement can be a useful starting point
When you feel stiff, the temptation can be to force a big stretch. Pilates takes a different approach. Movements can begin within a comfortable range and develop gradually, with attention to breathing, control and alignment.
That slower approach gives you time to notice what feels restricted, what feels comfortable and how different parts of the body work together.
Hips do not work in isolation
Hip movement is influenced by the pelvis, trunk and legs. In mat Pilates, exercises can involve controlled movement through these areas rather than treating one joint as if it works alone. Over time, this can help develop strength and coordination alongside mobility.
The same applies to shoulders
Shoulder movement is closely linked with the upper back, ribcage and posture. Pilates may include movements that encourage awareness of the shoulder blades, upper body and breathing rather than simply stretching the arms as far as possible.
Personalisation matters
If a movement does not feel right, it can be changed. In a 1:1 or 2:1 session, Lou can watch how you move and adjust the range, position or exercise. There is no benefit in trying to force yourself into somebody else's version of a movement.
If you have ongoing pain, a new injury or a medical concern, it is sensible to seek advice from an appropriate healthcare professional before starting or changing an exercise programme.
